Abruzzi Glacier, Gilgit Baltistan, Pakistan

Location : Gilgit Baltistan, Pakistan

The Abruzzi Glacier (Urdu: آبروزي گلیشیر ) is a glacier north of the Baltoro Kangri peak in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan. The glacier joins the Baltoro Glacier (one of the biggest glaciers outside the polar region) that flows northwest in the starting after which turns westward. The glacier offers great perspectives of K2, the best top in Pakistan.

The glacier was named in honor of Prince Luigi Amedeo, Duke of the Abruzzi an Italian mountaineer and arctic explorer who led a day trip to the Karakoram mountain range in 1909, along with numerous partial ascents of K2.

About Gilgit Baltistan :

Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) is a very sparsely populated high-mountain area in the north of Pakistan. Its natural environment is usually described with superlatives – the longest glaciers outside of the polar region, home of the world’s second highest peak (K2), and four more eight-thousanders. GB is largely a high-mountain desert; geologically, it spreads over three high mountain systems: Himalaya, Karakorum, and Hindukush. The society of GB is diverse in terms of language, religion, and ethnicity.
